Believers across various Abrahamic religions anticipate the arrival of a savior who will establish universal justice. Within Shi’i Islam, the concept of Mahdism holds a position of profound significance, as the Mahdi is believed to be the one who will establish the divine government across the globe. This elevated status has, from ʿAṣr al-Ḥuḍūr - the “Age of Presence” to the present day, inspired numerous individuals to pursue this position with varied motivations. This research, employing a descriptive-analytical methodology, seeks to identify false claimants of Mahdi, both during the Age of Presence and in contemporary times. It further explores the strategies used by the Imams for discerning these claimants, with a particular emphasis on the “Weapons of the Prophet” (silāḥ al-nabawī). Sects such as Kaysanites (Kaysāniyya), Zaydism (az-Zaydiyya), Baqiriyya, Nawusiyya, Waqifite, Bábism (Bâbiyye), and Humbushiyya represent examples of groups, both past and present, who have incorporated individuals as the Mahdi of the end times (Eschatology) into their belief systems. In their role as guides, the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) have presented certain criteria based on the Prophetic tradition to identify and counter false claimants to the Mahdism. This enables the recognition of spurious Mahdist pretenders. These criteria include: (1) The exclusive suitability of the Prophet’s armor to the body of the Imam al-Mahdi; (2) Weapons as an exclusive inheritance of the Imams; (3) Demanding substantiation of signs and names of the weapons from the claimants; (4) A parallel can be drawn between the Ark of the Covenant among the Banī Isrāʾīl (Israelites) and the Sword and the Imamate in Islam; (5) The claimant’s absence from the established chain of transmission of the weapons; (6) The Weapons of the Prophet as a source of power and miracles.
