Ibn Taymiyyah considers interpretation (Ta’vil) as the meaning of an external reality by accepting it as one of the narrative methods of understanding religion. He has rejected other applications of Ta’vil such as interpreting the word from its apparent meaning calling it the theological interpretation attributing it to the opposers. By claiming the consensus of the Sahaba (Companions) on his version of Ta’vil and rejection of interpretation of verses that contain Divine Attributes, he has confronted other applications of Ta’vil that goes against his view. In doing so he uses all that he has in power and criticizes the Quranic references of those who believe in the topic of interpretation.
This research, by a descriptive-analytical approach, criticizes his view theoretically. On the first criticism it counts the term Ta’vil as a Quranic – Narrative terminology that its meaning differs from exegeses (Tafsir) and not equal to the apparent meaning of the term. This term finds meaning in two levels of justifying the similar or explaining the inner aspect of the meaning. Then it will talk about the validity of Ta’vil using the Quran, and invalidity and baselessness of criticizing Ta’vil. It explains that it answers the view of forbiddance with five points. Then it counts various negative outcomes of negating Ta’vil such as: believing in anthropomorphism, God being visible, God having physical direction and be able to be pointed at, God having a time, attributing sins to the Prophets, opposing Quranic command on thinking, Quran’s literature not being miraculous, and rejection of exegeses and analogy of learning about the Attributes with the Essence. At the end it talks about the contradictory claims of Ibn Taymiyyah and the usage of Ta’vil in his own works along with his own confession on the topic along with criticism of the previous scholars (Salaf) on him running away from Ta’vil. Additionally it finds his criticism of others in forms of spreading rumors and disrespecting them, and by calling the criticisms regarding Ta’vil as imported doubts, a getaway from the proper answer and neglecting logical response. Such ups and downs in his view against the Ta’vil will prove his invalidity regarding the topic for all even those who seek the truth and may follow different sect or belief.
