Theological discussions in regards to the topic of intercession (Shifa’at) has been revolving around its definition and its outcome towards removing punishment or extending rewards; but what has been miss-looked by many scholars is the process of intercession or the how-method of the Shifa’at. Basically how does it work? The reason for its importance is that it could be used to reject the idea of intercession being irrational topic or belief. Abu Hamid al-Ghazali and Allama Tabatabai are among those who actually elucidate the process of intercession with this difference that al-Ghazali uses mystical metaphor but Allama Tabatabai uses logical and philosophical elucidation and reasoning. On the contrary, works of Rashid Reza is an example of those who consider intercession as irrational topic. This research while using comparative and analytical method, will review the two viewpoints of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali and Allama Tabatabai and will conclude that the two great scholars despite of their apparent differences are in fact complementary of each other and it is possible to provide rational and logical reasoning in defining intercession rejecting the doubts of it being irrational topic generally and specifically the works of Rashid Reza.
