The "Luminous Veil" is one of the enigmatic terms in Islamic mysticism, which has also been employed in authoritative religious texts. Although Mullā Ṣadrā accepts this term and believes in the existence of luminous veils—immaterial in nature—at the higher stages of spiritual transcendence, he aligns with other Islamic philosophers in confining the concept of veiling to the material realm. The present study seeks to elucidate, through a philosophical approach, how veiling can occur in immaterial entities. To this end, by conducting a lexical and terminological analysis of the word "veil" (ḥijāb) and by uncovering and examining the fundamental principles of Transcendent Philosophy (Ḥikmat al-Mutaʿāliyah) that are instrumental in explaining this issue—such as the absence of a strict boundary between the immaterial and the material, and the belief in the theory of mental existence (rūḥ al-maʿnā), which is entirely consistent with Ṣadrian principles—a comprehensive definition of "veil" has been provided, one that can be applied to various material and immaterial instances. Although this comprehensive definition offers a privative (ʿadamī) interpretation of the phrase "luminous veils" (ḥujub nūrāniyyah), an existential (wujūdī) interpretation of this expression is also presented based on Ṣadrian foundations. Furthermore, the research findings indicate that through a precise explanation of Ṣadrian ontological principles, the possibility of veiling in immaterial realms can be demonstrated in such a way that it does not conflict with the philosophical view that confines veiling to the material world.
