This study, using a descriptive-analytical method, examines the similarities and differences between Ahmad ibn Hanbal's political thought and the theory of religious democracy and tries to show its effectiveness in solving the problems of Islamic societies. The main question is whether Ahmad ibn Hanbal's political thought can be a complement to the theory of religious democracy and play a role in filling its possible gaps? The findings of the study indicate that although other readings based on religious democracy have achieved achievements in responding to the political needs of Islamic societies, Ahmad ibn Hanbal's thought offers new capacities for reinterpreting the concept of religious democracy due to its emphasis on the close connection between the Sharia and political power, observance of the general interests of the community, and criticism of authoritarian powers. In this framework, religious democracy is defined as the compatibility between the general will of society and the revealed principles of Islam; principles that include divine sovereignty, people's participation in decision-making, social justice, and protection of the Sharia. Thus, rereading Ahmad ibn Hanbal's thought can not only be considered a complement to the theory of religious democracy, but also provides a new theoretical capacity for facing the contemporary challenges of the Islamic world - including the crisis of legitimacy, political tyranny, and the need for popular participation.
