Since ancient times, the correct derivation of meanings from Quranic verses and narrations has been significantly influenced by a specific methodology known as the verbal principles. These principles, however, are grounded in customary understanding and are therefore limited to interpreting meanings accessible within ordinary linguistic comprehension.
This paper examines whether, in cases where the concepts conveyed by divine discourse surpass the bounds of conventional understanding and recourse to the verbal principles is impossible, one can—by relying on rational analysis and a particular articulation of the “spirit-of-meaning” theory—develop a valid methodology for interpretation.
Using a descriptive–analytical approach, the study scrutinizes the verbal principles and, by delineating the criteria for their authoritative weight and the contexts of their application, demonstrates that because they depend on common understanding, these principles serve solely to extract meanings intelligible to everyday cognition.
The research then analyzes the consequences of invoking these principles in certain verses that manifest exalted themes—such as “the Hand of God” and “God’s descent among the clouds.” By exposing the resulting flawed chains of inference, the paper proves that the established verbal principles cannot legitimately be relied upon to derive sublime or extra-conventional concepts from the Quranic text and its narrations.
Finally, drawing on the expositions of the masters of Transcendent Theosophy regarding the spirit of meaning, this study undertakes to establish a rational framework of verbal principles expressly designed to infer the elevated significations contained in the Divine text and its narrations.
