Abstract

The Wahhabi movement has always made great efforts to criticize and refute the virtues of the Commander of the Faithful, Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him). Among these virtues, the hadiths that indicate his high position among the companions have been particularly considered and disputed. The hadith “Ali is the sharer of Hell and Paradise” is one of the hadiths that has been the target of criticism and examination by this movement. Contemporary scholars of this movement consider this hadith to be fake and lacking in documentary and textual credibility; however, a careful examination of the works of virtue writing, history, genealogy, theology, and authentic hadith of the Sunnis reveals a view that contradicts the claim of Wahhabism. In this article, by using a descriptive-analytical method and adopting a critical approach, the problems and doubts raised by Wahhabism regarding this hadith are analyzed. In conclusion, this study has concluded that the aforementioned hadith has been narrated in reliable Sunni sources and many of their prominent scholars have confirmed the authenticity of its narrators. In addition, evidence will be presented indicating that this hadith indicates the high status of Imam Ali (a.s.) in distinguishing truth from falsehood and his spiritual status.
