Abstract

Imamate, as a fundamental pillar of the Imami Shi'a belief system, grounds all its Qur'anic and narrative arguments on the a priori validity of its traditionary texts. Consequently, this article asks: Can a coherent methodology be developed, based on the accepted principles of Sunni Hadith Sciences, to prove the authenticity (ṣiḥḥa) of narrations concerning the Imamate?

The research aims to establish a set of intra-Sunni criteria derived from their own Hadith sources, thus providing robust support for Imami arguments regarding the Imamate. Employing a comparative and descriptive-analytical approach, this study re-examines Sunni Hadith sources to extract and categorize eight methods for validating Imamate traditions into five main categories:

Fundamental Authentication (Ṣiḥḥa): Based on the definitions of Ṣaḥīḥ and Ḥasan Hadith, and the rule of strengthening through multiplicity of chains (taqwiya bi taʿaddud al-ṭuruq).

Affirmative Authentication: Based on explicit statements of authenticity, inclusion in Ṣaḥīḥ-compilations, and transmission with assertive formulae (ṣīgha al-jazm).

Argumentative Authentication: Through the utilization of the narration in a context of argumentation (iḥtijāj).

Descriptive Authentication: Based on scholars’ use of specific descriptive titles for the narrations.

Correlative Authentication: The extension of the authenticity ruling to narrations sharing the same chain (hadiḥ al-hamsān).

These five categories demonstrate that, based on accepted Sunni principles, a ruling of authenticity can be established for some Imamate narrations, thereby strengthening the theological arguments of the Imami Shi'a.
